Do you need a job or volunteer position to register for Cooperative Work Experience?

Yes. You need to be working or volunteering in a position that is related to your declared major for OCED 090. For OCED 091 your job does not need to be related to your major.  While the Cooperative Education Office is not a placement service we sometimes have both paid and unpaid positions available. We also have a Student Placement Office on campus, which specializes, in job placement.

How many units can I earn for my paid work?

Each 75 hours completed on the job is equivalent to one (1) unit of credit. The number of hours per week this will require depends on the length of your course.

For a full semester figure 1 unit for each 5 hours per week you work ( 20 hours per week = 4 units for OCED 090,  15 hours per week = 3 units for OCED 091 ).

12 week and 8-week courses require more hours per week (since there are fewer weeks) to fulfill the requirement.

Why Should I take Cooperative Work Experience?

A portion of the program is a performance evaluation, which includes objectives that can help raise your standard of job performance (no matter how long you have been at a particular job). This puts you in a better position for:

  • Salary increases
  • Job satisfaction
  • More interesting job assignments
  • Promotion
  • More challenging work

You are encouraged to improve your performance in the specific area where your employer feels you need improvement.

When you initiate goal-setting patterns on your job, you speed up progress on the job. This is an important concept to practice. When goal setting becomes a part of your routine, it can greatly benefit your future life-style.

Many employers like to see people put an effort into becoming more skilled at workplace values and habits. Often, when all else is equal, an employer will choose the person who has had some kind of work experience. They know that person has been exposed to valuable work related concepts.
